Pergusa Lake...
Extremely close to Enna is Lake Pergusa, linked to the ancient legend of Persephone's abduction by Hades. This spot, known for its motor racing track which includes Formula 3000 among its various competitions, is today a conservation area. For several years now, in fact, the entire lake area of Pergusa has been recognised as a special nature reserve. From the pinewood which slopes down towards the lakeside it is possible to see, depending on the season, numerous kinds of birds, both resident and migratory. Periodically, about every ten years, the water in the lake turns red due to a rare algal bloom.
In the pinewood around the lake, wide green spaces have been created for quiet picnics in touch with nature. Nearby, at Cozzo Matrice, remains have been discovered of an indigenous Hellenic centre (7th-6th centuries BC). One can still see a long section of a fortification wall, remains of several Bronze Age huts and several burial chambers in a rocky necropolis.
